Community Action Network began its work in the Hikone neighborhood – one of the Ann Arbor Housing Commission public housing communities. Hikone is located in SE Ann Arbor, and houses 29 families.
The community is ideally located, across the street from Buhr Park, surrounded by Rose and Mary Doyle parks. In addition to a well-utilized community vegetable garden, Hikone has a green house, two beautiful new playgrounds and a fitness trail.
CAN offers programs for children, teens and adults at the Hikone Community Center, focusing on academic support and enrichment, and improving personal, social and work-readiness skills. CAN also provides a dinner program Mondays – Thursdays, and lunch and dinner during summer camp. Residents have easy access to a food through a pantry that is open every weekday and via twice a month emergency food distributions. Other housing stabilization services include eviction and DTE shut-off prevention, Warm the Children vouchers for children 16 and under, and holiday presents, DTE Gifts of Energy at Christmas time. CAN also facilitates health, dental and vision referrals when needed.
A very active elected resident council co-coordinates community events and works to maintain a clean, safe and supportive neighborhood.
